How to Incorporate Sustainability into Your Haircare Routine

In recent years, the conversation around sustainability has become paramount, and this extends beyond just our diets and clothing choices. As consumers become increasingly conscious of their impact on the environment, many are turning their attention to their personal care routines, including haircare. If you're interested in embracing a haircare routine that contributes positively to the planet, this guide is for you. Here’s how to incorporate sustainability into your haircare regimen while maintaining healthy, beautiful hair.

Joico is proud to be an EPA Green Power Partner. Around the world, we are focused on sustainability, including resource efficiency and contributing to climate protection. We know that sustainability initiatives are driven by consumer demand for green products, and a desire to create sustainable value for our business and planet.

Joico’s Goals:

We aim to reduce the carbon footprint of operations by 75 percent by 2030. To do so, we are committed to continually improve energy efficiency and to draw 100% of the electricity used from renewable sources. We fully support the generation of green power in our plants, through funding and collaboration with external partners.

We want to influence the key levers in our value chain and leverage our brands and technologies to help our customers and consumers save 50 million tons of CO2 when using our products between now and 2030. We also expect from our suppliers to make a continuous reduction of the CO2 footprint of our raw materials and we thus plan to work together accordingly.

Sustainable Haircare Products

When it comes to sustainable haircare, the products you choose play a significant role. Look for items that are made from natural ingredients, avoiding harmful chemicals and synthetic additives. Brands that prioritize sustainability often minimize plastic use, opting for biodegradable or recyclable packaging instead.

Additionally, you can support brands that engage in ethical sourcing. Look for certifications such as Fair Trade or those that advocate sustainability, like the PETA Cruelty-Free label. This way, you can ensure that the ingredients in your haircare routine are sourced responsibly.

Tips for Tailoring Your Routine

To create a sustainable haircare routine, tailor your approach based on your specific hair type and needs. Here are some tips:

  • Research and Choose Wisely: Spend some time reading up on the brands and products you're interested in. Understanding what goes into your products will help you make informed choices.

  • Buy Less, Choose Well: Instead of purchasing multiple products, select high-quality items that serve multiple purposes. For instance, a good leave-in conditioner can double as a styling product, reducing your overall consumption.

  • Use Minimal Water: Some products require a large amount of water for use. Consider dry shampoos or styling products that allow you to limit water usage while still maintaining your hair's health and freshness.

By taking a personalized approach, you can minimize waste while ensuring your hair receives the care it needs.

How to Make Your Beauty Routine More Eco-Friendly?

Incorporating sustainable beauty practices into your haircare routine often requires a broader look at your entire self-care regimen. Here are some quick tips to enhance your beauty routine while being eco-conscious:

  • Haircare Treatments: Consider using your hair masks and treatments at home a weekly ritual. This will reduce the amount of times youre washing your hair, due to your hair feeling healthier.

  • Repurpose Bottles: Before discarding any empty hair product containers, think about how you might repurpose them. They can serve as planters, small storage containers, or water bottles.

  • Shop Locally: When you can, purchase products from local brands or stores. This not only provides a boost to the economy but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with shipping products over long distances.

Mindful Haircare Techniques

Your haircare methods can also influence your environmental impact. Here are some mindful techniques to adopt:

  • Reduce Heat Damage: By cutting back on the use of heat styling tools, you save energy and improve your hair’s health. Try embracing air-drying or experimenting with heatless hairstyles.

  • Wash Less Frequently: Overwashing your hair can strip it of natural oils, leading to increased use of haircare products. Many people find that washing their hair 2-3 times a week is ideal. This not only conserves products but also benefits your scalp and hair health.
